The first 2 ½ hour session of the course provides participants with an overview of findings from social science research on divorce, developmental and environmental factors that impact adjustment of children and adults, statistical information related to divorce and remarriage, and the emotional stages of grief, loss, and acceptance experienced by most children and adults as they move through this transition in the family.
The second 2 ½ hour session focuses on specific strategies for parenting apart, introduction of new relationships and blending families, gaining insight into common sources of conflict, effective communication styles, and indicators of stress, as well as specific techniques and resources for responding to and meeting the needs of children and families.
